Irving Public Library's mission is to improve the community’s quality of life by providing access to information for lifelong learning and by promoting the enjoyment of reading. The library system consists of a large Central Library, four neighborhood branches, a historical archive, genealogy center and bookmobile. Membership at the library is open to any Texas resident and each member of his or her family, with limited-use cards available for short-term visitors. More than 1.5 million books are checked out during the 900,000 visits the library receives each year. In addition to traditional services, the library is also a significant provider of computer and internet access to the community, with each location offering both free wireless internet and public use computers that saw more than 225,000 30 or 60-minute sessions in 2007. The library’s wireless internet is especially popular with teens from the Irving Independent School District, who each receive a school-issued laptop computer. Also, the library responds to the needs of the city’s most isolated residents through bookmobile visits and outreach programs at assisted living homes.
Each library location is equipped with a meeting or program room, and offers programming and services specifically designed to meet the needs of users in its neighborhood. The Central library provides free computer classes to the public and hosts a variety of programs, from film festivals to dance recitals, in its large meeting room. The East Branch Library serves as the literacy center. The Southwest Branch Library offers programs geared towards the retired community and a large Middle Eastern population. Northwest Branch provides materials and programs that appeal to the area’s highly diverse population, and Valley Ranch Branch hosts a variety of programs and events catering to their community of working professionals and families. All libraries offer popular storytime programs as well as the Summer Reading Club activities. In any given year, 75,000 people will have attended library programs at an Irving library.
